For decades, Indonesia's Aceh province was a war zone.Separatist rebels were locked in battle with government troops for nearly 30 years as they sought independence for the Aceh region of Sumatra island.15,000 people were killed in the fighting.Then in 2004 hostilities abruptly ended after the Indian Ocean tsunami shattered Aceh.Almost two-thirds of the estimated quarter of a million victims who perished died here. Within days of the disaster, the rebels declared a ceasefire to allow aid to reach survivors, paving the way for a permanent truce.Five years later the peace is holding and thousands of former rebels are returning to civilian life. This former rebel is now a cattle farm manager. [Fadlun, Former Aceh Rebel Fighter]: "We want to make the Acehnese prosperous, give job opportunities to people in the neighbourhood and besides, we were already tired of fighting."In the capital Banda Aceh, the feeling of forgiveness for the fighters is strong. In 2006, in the first direct elections, a former rebel was elected governor and a pro-independence activist became the vice governor.But observers say the real test of whether the guerrillas can live side-by-side with civilians they once hurt, has yet to come. Nur Djuli is the chairman of a government body helping to reintegrate former fighters.[Nur Djuli, Chairman, Aceh Peace-Reintegration Board]:"There are I'm afraid tens of thousand of ex-combatant still without jobs, victims of conflicts, and not only that, youths who are jobless, and these are potential danger for the peace process."While money and aid poured into to rebuild Aceh's devastated coastline, those living in the interior missed out on the handouts.The 2004 tsunami may have checked the secessionist tide for now but, five years on, and the people of Aceh are still consumed with rebuilding their lives and communities. Sumatran Tigers Released Into the Jungle

Indonesian forestry officials released two Sumatran tigers back into the wild on Friday.A five-year-old female tiger and a seven-year-old male tiger were captured by villagers in South Aceh province. The tigers had entered and stolen livestock from their villages.The ilavesiksizbling Wildlife Nature conservancy and Safari Park took the animals into custody.They implanted them with microchips so that officials could monitor their movements. After about 18 months they were released in a national park in Lampung province. The two will join the 45 other Sumatran tigers currently living in the park. The destruction of forests in Sumatra is creating a crisis and further threatening the habitat for Sumatran tigers. Forests are often cleared for palm oil cultivation and logging.Sumatran tigers have been killed during skirmishes with inhabitants living near the jungle. Illegal poachers also hunt them for their skin and body parts. Conservationists say this has caused the tiger population to decline to an estimated 400 to 500 or less, from an original estimate of a thousand in the the 1970s. The Sumatran tiger is the most critically endangered of the world's tiger subspecies. Bengkulu Elephant Under Siege

The forests of Sumatera have been the natural habitat of elephants, spread from Aceh in the north to Lampung in the South. But today, the lustrous human activities such as land clearing for big scale plantations, settlements, and agricultural, the elephant’s habitat has vanished. Only few people know that in Bengkulu Province, we can still meet groups of wild elephant. They spread in the forests area of Seblat, Air Ipuh, Air Dikit, and Air Berau. Like in other places, the populations of hill elephants in Bengkulu are also threatened. There are only 120-14 elephants, half of them are in the Seblat forest area. Seblat, located in North Bengkulu, is on the border of Kerinci Seblat National Park. En Indonesie une paix fragile entre les rebelles séparatistes de la région d'Aceh et le gouvernement tient encore. Cette paix avait commencé juste apres le tsunami. De nos jours après des décennies de conflits et de pertes, ils font des efforts pour la reconstruction de leur communauté et de leur économie, mais le succès n est pas encore garanti car il reste beaucoup d'ex-combattants qui se retrouvent sans emplois.
